Using an air mattress at home
Setting up and using it
- Place the air mattress on top of the bed mattress, with the tubes at the foot end, and hang the pump on the footboard.
- Set the pressure for the patient’s weight and comfort, as described in the instructions.
- Check it regularly: slide a hand under the cells at the hips. If you can feel the bed underneath, increase the pressure.
- Use only a single thin sheet on top. Extra layers reduce the pressure relief.
- Keep the pump switched on at all times while the patient is on the mattress.
Care and safety
- Wipe the surface with a mild disinfectant, and keep sharp objects away from the cells.
- Keep the air tubes free of kinks, and make sure they stay connected.
- An air mattress does not replace turning. Continue repositioning the patient as the nurse advises.
Rent or buy?
Rent: Rent during recovery or for short periods in bed, such as after surgery or a hospital stay.
Buy: Buy for patients who will be bedbound long term.
