Using an oxygen cylinder at home
Setting up and using it
- Always use the cylinder with a regulator and flowmeter, and set the flow the doctor prescribes.
- Keep the cylinder upright and secured in a stand or trolley so it cannot fall.
- Store it in a cool, ventilated place, out of direct sun and away from heat, flames and smoking.
- Never put oil, grease or creams on the valve or regulator, and keep greasy hands off the fittings.
- Open the valve slowly, and check the pressure gauge often so you know when it is running low.
Care and safety
- Close the valve fully when the cylinder is not in use.
- Do not try to repair or force a valve or regulator. Call us instead.
- Keep the tubing and cannula clean, and replace them if they crack or become dirty.
- Arrange a refill or replacement before the gauge reaches the red zone.
Rent or buy?
Rent: Rent a cylinder for short-term oxygen needs, travel to and from hospital, or as a backup to a concentrator during power cuts.
